Treatment of vaginal fungal infection with monistat allows the medication to kill the fungus that is causing the irritation, itching and discharge. As the fungus dies off, the vaginal tract will respond with increased lubrication to allow for flushing of the foreign matter. Since you are using a single dose treatment, watch for continued/not improving symptoms as you may need an additional dose.
