Amoxicillin and nitrofurantoin often are not effective against E. faecalis, even when susceptible to them by standard testing. (The technical terminology is that such strains are "tolerant" of these and other antibiotics despite susceptibility by standard tests.) Selecting effective treatment can be challenging.
