The NIPS test is done on a blood sample from mother at 8-10 weeks that can identify babies DNA circulating in her blood. That DNA can be compared with prospective fathers and be accurate enough to prove paternity. Due dates are at best estimates and this is a legal issue requiring accuracy. A false assumption can bring a surprise at delivery.
