The two explanations are not mutually exclusive, but the real point is that this does not suggest any kind of problem or infection. Increased cervical mucus due to rising estrogen levels prior to ovulation can be used as a guide for natural family planning (either avoiding pregnancy or trying to conceive) but that may not be a helpful sign in your case.
