What are some reasons why hyperventilation would not be performed prior to an eeg?

Although an EEG may be normal in some cases in the absence of hyperventilation, this portion may be not performed if there is medical risk in performing this technique. Also, if the EEG shows overt epileptiform activity, hyperventilation could provoke a seizure and would not be needed for further confirmation.
