Early latent syphilis -- up to a year since infection -- often is sexually transmissible due to possible subtle (difficult to recognize) lesions, often internally (mouth, rectum, vagina). Late latent syphilis (over 1 yr duration) is sexually not transmissible at all. Transmission potential can continue congenitally (i.e. to a fetus in utero) or by blood transfusion.
