Coughing is a natural reflex that helps move lung debris from deep inside to the outlet where it can be expelled. Lack of this protective reflex would leave a kid drowning in their mucus. If the kids usual activities of daily life, feeding, playing, smiling, etc. are okay I ignore a simple cough. If it interferes with life I investigate the cause.

If the cough is associated with feeding difficulty, fever ,rapid breathing or ill appearance, this raises concern. Most often, the cold symptoms begin to improve and nasal saline drops are often effective in reducing congestion and post nasal drip cough. Watch for signs outlined above, see your Pediatrician if cough persists for four weeks.
