A member asked:

What's the prognosis of diverticulosis if found accidentally for a male under age of 35? is the progression to diverticulitis inevitable over the course of life?

Diverticulosis is because of weakness in the bowel wall forming bulges like in hernia; increased pressure during defeacation may also contribute to its formation. Diverticulitis is because of infection in the diverticula and it is spurious rather than a natural progression. Both could be prevented by high fiber diet, adequate fluid intake and healthy oil that makes for easy bowel movement.

No, most people who have diverticulosis never know it and never develop symptoms of diverticulitis or diverticular bleeding down the road. You should eat a lot of fiber, keep yourself well hydrated, and contact your doctor if you have symptoms that seem related to the digestive tract. Good luck.
