In primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), symptoms start 1 to 12 days (median 5 days) after swimming or having another nasal exposure to water containing Naegleria. Signs and symptoms of the infection include severe frontal headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, seizures, altered mental status, hallucinations, coma. It is a "rare disease" as defined by the U.S. Rare Disease Act of 2002
