There is a tube between the middle ear space and the back of the throat that permits drainage of mucus from the middle ear to the throat. It also allows air to enter the middle ear. When the jaw moves it straightens the tube and if it has been closed by irritation it may re-open allowing a rush of air into the ear. This is all a normal but sometimes uncomfortable event.
