I heard if you get the depo shot while on your period you are protected immediately. i was bleeding from coming off my last birth control when i got the depo shot. is that the same thing as a period? just want to know if im protected immediately?

You should be protected because you switch directly the contraceptive method from pill to shot even the shot may not be given during the first 5 days of your cycle. You think you had a withdrawing bleeding not a regular period, I guess. Take care!

Many OBGYNs will suggest using backup protection when switching between BC types, to be sure the body adapts, and ovulation does not occur during the transition. You may be protected, depending on how you used the previous method. If avoiding pregnancy is a major concern, I would not consider protection immediate.
