When you are a teenager, your periods can be quite irregular and also have varying amounts of bleeding. It is due to your hormones not being as regulated as well as when you are in your 20's and 30's. However this irregular pattern/heavy bleeding should be discussed with your gynecologist and many times it can be treated to make you more comfortable and not have unexpected bleeding.

Prolonged bleeding with cramping may be caused by pregnancy outside the uterus (ectopic) so obtain a serum HCG test which can detect low levels of HCG, and if positive. See your GYN in any case, since what is described is not normal.
