Different tests for different things. A Pap smear looks at cells to check for abnormal ones, such as cancer cells. An HPV test looks for the genetic material (DNA) of some HPV viruses, namely the "high risk strains" of HPV that we worry about. Currently, many but not all Pap smear samples are sent for HPV DNA testing. One should ask her own doctor about the type of test being done, if worried.

Not with a conventional PAP smear. HPV infection needs to be tested for specifically with a molecular test. Get HPV vaccine.
