If you do not have a bowel movement for 48 hours you should take laxative OTC then drink well after you are successfully emptying your bowel. If you had bowel movement yesterday and you do not have today, just take some stool softener and drink well in the next 24 hours. If you have not had an effective BM for 3 days, you may need a fleet enema if laxative does not work.

A lot depends on how long the symptoms have been happening. If they just recently started, you could consider just eating more fiber in your diet and drinking more fluids, and perhaps even taking a fiber supplement for a while. If the symptoms are long lasting, you should see your doctor to be evaluated. Good luck.

You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods.
