Depending upon the severity of the critical problem that led to intubation & placement on ventilator support the weaning process is gradual & may take 2 weeks or more in some cases. The pulmonologist or intensivist has to decide if the patient's condition is ready for weaning, then support is gradually decreased & observation of the patient's ability to breathe while receiving minimal or no suppor
