A "HPV positive" pap smear is usually sent for what is called "reflex" testing for the specific type of HPV. Certain types are known to predispose to cervical cancer. Ask your GYN physician about whether the specific cell type was requested by the lab doing the pap smear analysis. Colposcopy with biopsy is a common treatment for certain types of HPV.
