There is evidence that long term use can contribute to cognitive decline. Melatonin may be a safer and better OTC supplement to take than Benadryl. Although it is generally safe with liver disease, it is probably not a good idea to use a sedative every night for sleep. If you are having difficulty sleeping, speak with your primary care doctor for a better solution. Good luck.

Several bad outcomes by taking Benadryl nightly: 1. Rapid onset of tolerance, where your sleep pattern deteriorates (learn a sleep hygiene program) 2. Benadryl has a significant anti-cholinergic effect, and your cognitive function will sharply worsen over time, especially at age 66. 3. Standard side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and there is a falling risk.
