A member asked:

I now learned that the tissue from breast cancer is cut and examined in slides to study the history of the cancer. what happens after, does anyone know if the tissue is just thrown away?

Slides are prepared and stained to show cell types from samples taken from suspect breast tissue, located by digital mammogram or even MRI, and biopsied by ultrasound location. The remainder after diagnostic samples are taken are discarded, but the slides preserved for the particular patient.

The tissue is usually embedded in paraffin and is stored for a number of years. Excess tissue that is not meaningful to the diagnosis is discarded. The slides are also retained for a few decades.
