A member asked:

My 80 yr old mom was diagnosed with a benign suprasellar meningioma 7 years ago. its now golf ball size, she has blurred vision, memory loss, muscle weakness and she suffered a lacunar stroke. can it be removed, if not what is her life expectancy?

I believe that only a neurosurgeon can answer your questions after reviewing appropriate tests and examining your Mom. Her attending physician would assess her ability to undergo neurosurgery though.

Extirpation of the meningioma should be based upon the secondary mass effect and the symptoms secondary to its presence. The visual issues may be secondary, but the stroke is likely due to other causes. Yes, surgery can be done, BUT does the efficacy outway the potential risks in an 80 yo? Query the neurosurgeon!

This would be a judgement call based on the risks and potential benefits of the surgery. Only after these have been determined can the situation we discussed with your mom in order for her to decide whether she wishes to proceed. Talk to her doctors. Good luck.
