Been on levlen for many years and always had a period the same flow and always lasted for 5 days. last few months its down to 1 spotting day, the one normal heavier day then spotting the day after (3days total, 1 real day). what could cause this?

Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.
