A member asked:

I had a swab test and the doctor inserted a speculum. it really hurt and i bleed does this mean i am not longer a virgin? also, my private part still hurts three days later and it stings/burns when i pee is that normal? my hymen doesn't look the same?

The definition generally accepted for virginity is the lack of any past partner sex. Some concentrate on the hymen, but it never developed in some or is lost in non-sexual activities. If you had a regular speculum inserted, it likely stretched or tore the hymen. That can cause pain & bleeding. The incident doesn't change your virgin status, just the shape of your hymen.

Agree with Dr. Ferguson. You did not have sex and you are still a virgin. A medical examination with a speculum does not violate virginity. Get HPV vaccine. Wish you good health! Safe sex: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/safer-sex-guidelines
