We basically only order CEA levels to follow known colon cancer cases. There are many causes of elevated CEA levels unrelated to malignancy. The upper limit of normal levels is 2.9 but values as high as 35 have been reported in.nonmalignant conditions. For this reason CEA levels are not good as a screening tool.

CEA is typically ordered in patients being followed for colorectal cancer and doubling in value in 3 months has to be assigned to cancer progression/ activity until proven otherwise.
