Yes, this is very common. Almost everyone becomes infected with HPV during their early sexually active years, often several times. Those infections mostly lie dormant for life, but sometimes they reactivate. This is the most common cause of an abnormal Pap smear or positive HPV test in women over 30 years old; or her monogamous husband had reactivation of an old infection, now transmitted to her.
