My room mate has had crusty sores on her arm and she's been in contact with me, sitting beside me and such and i have touched these sores. well she just found out she has syphilis. can i contract it this way?

No risk whatsoever. Syphilis is not transmitted by nonsexual personal contact or from a contaminated environment. There also is no risk from shared toilets, kitchens, eating utensils, and so on. If you remain worried, you could have a syphilis blood test in a few weeks, but strictly for reassurance -- not because you actually are at risk.
