It's an ethical thing: The doctor who decides whether you NEED this operation is the one who would actually DO it (neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon). My guess: "mild" canal stenosis is not an indication for surgery. The tough thing about chronic pain is that, more often than not, pain location, quality & severity don't correlate with any obvious anatomical pathology.
