A member asked:

My doctor said that i had a very small pneumothorax in my right lung, can this be due because of dehydration ? and how long will it be for a full recovery ? i was just told to take it easy and to use my albuterol pump every 4 hours, i have asthma?

A small pneumothorax is not rare in asthma patients. It represents air that found its way between the lungs and chest wall, usually after one of the alveolae pops. It's more a function of air trapping in lungs that are mechanically less sturdy. I cannot link it to dehydration, although one could be dehydrated at the same time. They usually self-heal in days if heavy exertion is avoided.

Follow your asthma action plan which typically should include an anti inflammatory agent. Avoid asthma triggers and smoke. Avoid heavy lifting, straining, cough for the next six weeks. If you need Albuterol every four hours, better control may usually be achieved by adding or adjusting an anti inflammatory agent. A virtual consult with Health tap is available.
