Seriousness depends on what is causing it. Most likely hemorrhoids but review family history and have it checked out. If it is cancer don't buy any long novels. ;-) Dr. Humor. Get it checked OUT!

After nine years of blood in stool and now your concerned. Best see a Gastroenterologist for exam and treatment. Dark or black blood is from an upper GI tract problem, an ulcer or gastritis or inflammation of stomach lining, enlarged veins in stomach or esophagus. If blood is bright red, a lower GI tract problem. Hemorrhoids or anal fissure. Also an ulcer, polyps, colitis or Chron's disease.
