Permanent source of infection.... no. Do they need to be meticulously maintained... yes. The issue is that your gingiva does not adhere to the implant like it does to your teeth. Additionally, if you end up with some bone loss around the implant and the surface becomes exposed to the oral cavity, that surface will always be contaminated. Discuss with your cardiologist.

There is always the chance of any infection occurring, but you want to minimize it from happening. If you are pre-medicated and the standard of care is used to prevent infection[endocarditis], than you should be fine. Be sure to follow the post operative instructions and maintain good oral hygiene, especially around the implants.

You can reduce risk by having your implants/crownos accomplished by a specialist Prosthodontist. It would be prudent for your Cardiologist and your treating Dentist or Prosthodontist communicate directly with each other. There's more to risk the just the procedure. For example, if you don't floss daily you are at risk for both endocarditis and periimplantitis
