I'm so sorry to hear of your girlfriend's passing. Do you know if she had meningococcal meningitis? It is spread by close contact like kissing. Close contacts are often treated with prophylactic antibiotics for up to 30 days from contact. I recommend calling your MD or a specialist in infectious diseases for advice and any instructions.

See Dr. Colantino's response and the discussion there. But please do not worry about you at fault for her infection. Most cases are caused by bacteria the patient herself is carrying. Even if caught from someone else, it doesn't need to be an intimate contact. Even if you happen to be carrying the same bacterial strain, you could have both caught it elsewhere. This definitely is not your fault!
