A member asked:

My 2 year old had an ear infection that wasn't too bothersome on one of her ears.antibiotics were prescribed & i mistakenly missed few doses. 2 weeks later, she woke up with the same ear pain. should we wait it out or does she need another antibiotic?

She would benefit from a re-evaluation. The pain comes from a stretch on the ear drum that can happen as a new infection builds up a puss collection (pushed out) or when it is drawn in when the ear infection fades but has not completely recovered. Just assuming the one issue can fail to address the real need. If it is recovering all she needs is ibuprofen.

The initial ear infection may take some time to fully resolve, but the association of ear pain is concerning and indicates that there is a possible build up of fluid behind the ear drum. The cause may include the original ear infection or a new ear infection. Many ear infections are caused by viruses. Applying a warm compress to the effected ear is often helpful in reducing pain.
