Sounds like it can be several things knee. This requires an in-person examination. You can start with your general practitioner. Pain in the knee can come from the part of the internal joints, muscles/tendons, bursa/bone around it. Hip and back problems can also cause knee pain

I think, as a rule of thumb, most clinicians don't consider knee noises to be a serious issue unless they're accompanied by other symptoms. Since you're experiencing some associated knee discomfort you may have some pathology in your cartilage,tendons or ligaments. As has been recommended, start with an examination by your MD or orthopedic surgeon if you wish to look into the status of your knee.
