My pediatrician prescribed benadryl to my 4 year old for allergies. the bottle says do not use for children under 6?

This drug has been used for allergies from infants to adults for decades. When dosed properly it is safe. Any wording suggesting it is not is applied at the recommendation of the producers lawyers, not the docs.

For non urgent allergic reactions, there are some other options which you may like to discuss with your PCP. There are once daily antihistamines for young children available. Benadryl does have side effects including drowsiness, but has been used for many years. During an urgent situation, Benadryl is used to help control the reaction. Nasal saline if often effective in reducing congestion.
