As a woman approaches 40, fluctuations in menstrual regularity, with attendant effects in estrogen can be avoided by taking oral bcp's, which stop ovarian activity and provide a low dose of estrogen without variation, while preventing pregnancy at 96-98 % rate, if taken as directed and punctuality maintained.

The pill was initially studied as a way to treat menstrual irregularities. Contraception was a side effect that became the more common use. While an IUD may be effective contraception, if you want predictable menses this may be the best way to get them. Doubling up does not necessarily become a problem. Your IUD is hormone free so there would not be a conflict from that standpoint.
