Have you had this before? If red with being painful you may want to see a medical professional to evaluate for possible infection that may require antibiotics. If the pain is from swelling that stretches the skin, and that is unlikely if very painful, you may put warm compress in addition to elevation and pain medication. Compression stockings may be helpful if ongoing swelling for a while.

Having pain and swelling in only one foot requires further examination. Many possibilities. Fracture to a foreign body with infection. With the leg also swollen I would be concerned of possible phlebitis. Blood clot is also possible. See your family doctor for evaluation and treatment.
