A member asked:

Are the pregnancy tests in a doctors office different than the home pregnancy tests? im 5-6 days late and have a negative hpt the last three mornings. unprotected sex 26 days ago. what is likelihood of being pregnant?

The hormones that turn a UPT positive should be in detectable quantity by 3 weeks after exposure if not earlier. The first morning urine is more concentrated & considered a better sample. Negative tests at the point of missed menses suggest a true negative. Some women just miss a cycle occasionally, especially at a posted age of 50.

Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.
