A member asked:

Why would a hidascan show no tracer in bowel after 90 minutes but yet mrcp is normal (except little sludge in gbneck) intra&extra hepatic biliary are non-dialated? hs shows hepatic tracer with excretion into biliary system and gb seen in 16 mins?

HIDA scan is mainly used to confirm or rule out cholecystitis (if the gallbladder is not visualized due to cystic duct inflammation, cholecystitis is likely present) so it is not significant if tracer is not visualized in the bowel which can happen if gallbladder does not contract to push out enough bile with tracer. MRCP is more sensitive and specific than HIDA for evaluation biliary duct patency
