A member asked:

If i had unprotected a week before my period was supposed to start, and took a test would it be accurate? technically a week and a half after sex, but after a missed period?

If a period is delayed due to pregnancy it would usually test positive. However, urine pregnancy tests are seldom positive before 2 weeks after exposure. Early tests can be falsely negative. Some normal women skip a cycle or 2 occasionally.

Conception occurs within day or so of the sex. It takes about 3 weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG for a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period. If the result is negative repeat the test in 4-5 days. Use first morning urine and follow instructions for the test carefully.
