It was thought to be that HSV-1 was oral and HSV-2 was genital. This is no longer the case. The risk of contracting the disease occurs with contact with someone in those areas who have active infection, which is a the vesicular rash. Once someone has HSV, they can be a carrier and may have flares/outbreaks in the future
