Having HSV2 roughly doubles the chance of catching HIV if exposed sexually. "Double" may sound like a lot, but in most situations it's usually not a big deal. For example, if the risk of catching HIV for any particular exposure is, say, 1 chance in a thousand, with HSV2 it becomes 1 in 500, still pretty unlikely. It is true that the higher risk with HSV2 doesn't depend on having active herpes.
