My family and i got food poisoning or virus from someone. our dr thinks it's most likely the food we ate because of the story but no way to know for sure. the dr says stay away from anyone just incase but are we really contagious if it's from food?

If it is food poisoning, you are not contagious. Your doctor told you to stay away from people because he/she can't be sure it is not a virus, which would be contagious. I would give the same advice: Stay away from people unless you are certain it's food poisoning, or until your symptoms resolve.
