My two week old son slept for 5 hours today - can that be normal? he has been up a lot and breastfeeding a lot the past few days and hasnt gotten much sleep - could he be catching up?

Infants that begin to sleep well, 8 hrs straight in the first week should be allowed that developmental step. They can focus feeds closer together during the day. As long as they are good feeders & filling out, enjoy a little more sleep yourself. I encouraged moms to finish feeds 1/2 hr before putting them down so they don't pair feeds to getting to sleep. Learning to self settle promotes this.

This is likely a pleasant surprise, but it is likely that a two week old will revert to his admittedly short history of sleep. At this age, focus on eating, diapers and weight gain.
