Firm or hard poop which causes straining is considered constipation. Fecal Impaction occurs when constipation is taken to an extreme and hard poop fills the lower intestinal tract, colon and rectum with no movement. There is always poop traveling through normally active intestines. When it gets to the rectum, at a certain mass, wall motility typically causes it to be pushed out.
