OBGYNs often put someone with menstrual irregularities on the pill to establish a predictable menstrual pattern. The pill was studied decades ago with this in mind, but the side effect of birth control eventually became its more common use. If used for several months or a year the body may respond by establishing a simple pattern. Some women will remain irregular.
