A member asked:

I was given keflex for a possible infection and am breastfeeding a 6 day old. is there a way i can minimize how much he gets in my breastmilk? for instance, by waiting a certain amount after taking the keflex before breastfeeding?

No, there's nothing you can do. Timing the doses in this manner will make little if any difference. Happily, it isn't likely to be at all harmful to your baby. But to be certain, give a call to the baby's pediatrician.

The general rule for breastfeeding and maternal meds is simple. If it is safe to give to the kid it is safe for mom to take it. Breastmilk is made continuously and timing doses has no significant effect on the amount transferred. I agree with Dr. Handfield, don't worry about it.
