If you are sexually active and have had unprotected sex, you may be pregnant. A home pregnancy test may be positive as soon as the first day of your unusual period. If you are not sexually active, then hormonal fluctuations can explain the difference. Hormones can be affected not only by stress, and medication but by weight loss/gain, new exercise program, lack of sleep, illness, vaccinations.

Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.
