Although salt-containing liquids are appropriate for young athletes during and following extreme exercise wherein a significant loss of salt is expected, such salt-containing beverages can contribute to hypertension and heart failure in older persons and those with a history of hypertension and/or heart failure. For most people, water or other non-salty liquids are recommended.
