A member asked:

Why do doctors tend to check only tsh & not t3, (liothyronine) t4 by themselves?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

TSH is for screening: Tsh is considered a screening test. It's cheaper than ordering all three and the T3 (liothyronine) and T4 aren't usually suggested for screening. Doctors will use all three if the screening test is abnormal or they are following known thyroid disease.
