Herpes outbreaks can occur in areas surrounding the genitals, or in the oral cavity (lips, tongue, gums). Stress (pregnancy, emotional, school, work) can activate dormant herpes virus and cause herpetic ulcers. If a history of herpes I/II exists, in pregnancy, it is best to take suppressive antivirals to help prevent outbreaks to avoid transmission at delivery to the infant.
