"Heavy bleeding" sometimes can cause clots to form inside the uterus, and when the uterus contracts, the clots can cause cramping as they are expressed though the narrow endocervical canal. Ask your GYN about low dose oral bcp's, which will greatly diminish the bleeding and therefore the clot formation.
