A member asked:

Hi, i'm worried about what will happen at an ob gyn visit. i'm 30 and have never gone - and i've recently been assaulted and raped, i'm worried that i might just have a panic attack, i don't even know the doctor - what do i need to tell them + how?

Using your native language is a good way to start. You may feel isolated/alone/vulnerable but unfortunately this is something they deal with often. Try to talk to the clinic nurse before you go & share your concerns. They may be willing to discuss your event before the visit & give you an outline of what to expect, even if the exam is on a different day.

Agree with Dr. Ferguson. Please try to overcome your fear as you need the examination for your continuing health. You may ask a female chaperone to be present in the examination room. It is imperative that you be tested for sexually transmitted infections. Wish you good health!
